Good News: Teen Volunteerism is on the Rise

Youth think serving their communities is so cool that more than 55% of American youth give their time, and ONLY 5% volunteer to fulfill a school requirement. Young people are volunteering in increasing numbers. Since 1991, high schoolers who volunteered at least once per month has increased from 24% to 39% in 2014. More than any other group under age 35, kids 16-19 are taking up the challenge to improve the world.

So why do teens volunteer? 75% of young people surveyed say they volunteer because they want to make a difference to those in need. They are compassionate and feel that helping others will result in others helping them. 73% of adolescents believe they can create positive change in their communities.   And making a difference they are! 15.5 million teens volunteer each year, dedicating well over 1.3 billion to improving their communities.
